American Beauty, 2018

For this project I looked at Neo-Noir films and 1950's housewives in America, assessing the role of women in an era of Levittowns and the Baby Boom; forcing them into seemingly perfect families. My collection focused on the emotional and mental impact this situation would have had on many women who felt unfulfilled and trapped, a phenomenon discussed by Betty Friedan and coined 'Feminine Mystique’. Relating this information back to Neo-Noir I took inspiration from films such as Blue Velvet; blurring the lines between bad and good, using irony within both phrases and colour.
